week 6: 11/3/24 - 15/3/24

Seeing as I was able to finish off the research over the weekend, I decided to add a section onto problem solving with the consent issues with Sally. Though once I had written it up, I tried to put it onto my website, but Wix wasn’t agreeing with me so couldn’t add any images on, so I just left it and decided to add it on the next day instead. Monday wasn’t as productive as I wanted it to be, but I got enough done for me to move onto the pre-production stage on Tuesday.

With the pre-production I genuinely wasn’t sure on where to start with this as I felt there was a lot to get done so decided to create storyboards. Now I wasn’t 100% sure whether these were actually needed for a documentary, but I could picture how to start of the documentary would go so decided to start storyboarding that. I found that this was quite helpful in terms of being able to picture it but once I got to a certain point, I couldn’t actually picture how the documentary would flow, this is likely due to the fact that it is an observational documentary so I cannot plan the events that I’m going to film. However, I have a rough understanding of how the days of the shoots go due to me being at the dance school for so long, I know how the rehearsal and show days’ work so I can understand how the events may plan out.

On Tuesday morning I sorted out sending consent forms/contributor release forms as I realised this should probable have been a priority to get sorted otherwise, I cannot film or take out kit. The details of this can be seen in the pre-production section through clicking the button below.

As I mentioned, I had made a start on the storyboards which were slightly helping but really not doing much and on Wednesday I was told that for documentaries there isn’t much use for storyboards. This is because with documentaries most of the structuring happens in post-production, especially when its any mode other than expository. You cannot plan the events of a documentary, especially an observational one, so storyboarding it isn’t helpful, if we are being realistic here. Seeing as I didn’t have a need for storyboards anymore, I made the decision to move onto logistical pre-production as this was something I knew I could get done. So, for the rest of the week, I focused on completing the production schedules, risk + location assessments etc. this was a fairly easy task for me to do so got it done swiftly.
