Unit 13: Final Major Project
week 11: 15 - 19/4/24
As mentioned last week, I continued to edit from Monday morning. Because I am editing a documentary, I found that rather than editing a section/question and adding in b-roll/actuality there and then, I decided that I would rather cut everything into their sections from the interview footage. Though this is a long and tedious process, hopefully this will allow me to finish a rough cut by Friday. There weren’t masses of progress made in the edit on Monday as I made sure to catch up with some written work which I had fallen behind on.

Tuesday, I went back into premier and found I couldn’t move past the introduction as there was no music, which for me made it felt unfinished. While I understand this is a rough cut, I still felt I needed to add in music just to give it something as I just didn’t think it was right. For this I went onto multiple copyright free music websites to try and find some music, but there were a couple of sites which would say they are free but actually to download they weren’t. So, I moved my search over to a site called Pixabay, which is a completely free + copyright free website to use. This was very useful, and I was able to find some music to fit this, this is explored further in the post-production section.
When it came to Wednesday, I found it was a very productive day, I was able to move on from the introduction and started the tedious, but needed, task of cutting. This involved me going through each clip, with the logging, and finding areas where the three interviewees said similar things, or parts which I can link together, therefore creating a sentence but from different people. I feel doing this is a way to make it seem as though the three are sharing the same experience completely, which they are, but having them each say something so similar without the others knowing shows the experience is so similar without them realising. Doing this did make me realise how much Emily spoke in comparison to the others so I am now unsure how much of what she says I keep or don’t, but she says a lot of good and interesting stuff. This is something I will overcome after the first couple rough cuts are completed, as then I will be able to make more critical decisions on what’s cut and what stays.

Thursday was the same as Wednesday, just spent making more progress on the cutting but Friday is where a lot of progress was made. On Friday I was able to complete the first rough cut, without b-roll or actuality. This took up the morning of Friday which was unexpected as thought it was going to take me the whole day, luckily it didn’t this is shown in the timelapse below.
Seeing as this was done, I exported the finished video as rough cut one. I felt it was best for me to do as it shows I have cut a version, with to b-roll or actuality, I have been able to focus on the structure of it and what content is featured. As I have logged all of the footage with timestamps and descriptions it will make this afternoon a lot easier for me add in the extra bits.
The afternoon was focused on adding in b-roll, not as much got done as it was mainly me taking time to find the areas of footage I wanted to use and adding them in. This can all be seen in the timelapse to the right. With the b-roll/actuality, I found that there may be areas where I want to include snippets of dances themselves, so this would mean me extending the length of the documentary. The initial rough cut was running at 11 minutes, roughly, so adding in these sections would make for more time used, making the next cut even longer. This is something I still want to include as I feel the audience would enjoy seeing what the three are talking about.

This is the final timeline at the end of Friday. So, so far, it’s looking quite blank but once all the b-roll and actuality it should be looking a lot better.

Overall, this week has been successful as I have made lots of progress and can start pushing the edit forward to the final stages and perfect areas.
